Dr Bowden offers individual psychotherapy for patients where this is appropriate. Psychotherapy provides a structured space to explore patterns in thoughts, emotions, and relationships, and to better understand how past experiences may shape current difficulties. This work is often gradual and requires consistency, but can lead to meaningful and sustained change over time.

Dr Bowden utilises a range of psychotherapy modalities, including psychodynamic (psychoanalytic) psychotherapy, eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, and parts work (structural dissociation model).

Please note that all patients seeking psychotherapy with Dr Bowden must first attend an initial general psychiatric assessment to establish what will be the best fit for your unique concerns and circumstances.

Individual Psychotherapy

Dr Bowden provides general psychiatric care for all mental health conditions to adults and adolescents (16 years and above). Dr Bowden provides new assessments and ongoing care for established mental health conditions. Dr Bowden has a special interest in trauma-related conditions, dissociation, functional disorders, medically unexplained symptoms, and neurodevelopmental disorders (neurodiversity).

General Psychiatric Assessment & Care

Dr Bowden provides detailed specialised psychiatric assessments for adults and adolescents (16+) for neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Dr Bowden does not offer neurodevelopmental assessments for children aged under 16 years. The assessment process is more detailed than a standard psychiatric consultation. These assessments focus on understanding patterns that have typically been present across the lifespan, including attention, learning, social interaction, emotional regulation, and sensory processing, and considering potential overlap or interactions with other mental health conditions. This often involves exploring your developmental history in depth, including childhood experiences, education, relationships, and day-to-day functioning over time. To ensure an accurate and comprehensive assessment, additional information is often required beyond the consultation itself. This may include reviewing school reports, previous assessments, or obtaining information from family members or other supports (with your consent). Standardised questionnaires or screening tools may also be used, requiring careful scoring and interpretation. This process takes additional clinician time both during and outside of the appointment.  Because of this increased complexity and the time required for thorough assessment, neurodevelopmental assessments are typically scheduled as longer (90 minute) consultations and attract a higher fee than standard psychiatric appointments. The aim is to provide a careful, evidence-based assessment that leads to clear and meaningful recommendations tailored to your individual circumstances.  Patients wishing to discuss neurodevelopmental assessments must first attend an initial general psychiatric consultation, and neurodevelopmental assessment may be organised thereafter. Please note that this assessment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis nor specific treatment. This assessment does not include any NDIS documentation or formal reports, which are billed separately.

Practical Information

Session Length

Appointment length varies based on appointment type:

  • Initial psychiatric consultations are 60 minutes, while review consultations are either 30 or 45 minutes, providing ample space to explore your concerns, discuss your needs and plan next steps in a calm, focused environment.

  • Neurodevelopmental assessments are 90 minutes.

  • Psychotherapy sessions are typically 50 minutes. Longer sessions may be offered in specific circumstances, for example EMDR reprocessing sessions.

Cancellation & Non-Attendance Policy

Appointments are reserved specifically for you. We recognise that unforeseen circumstances can arise and that, at times, it may be necessary to cancel or reschedule an appointment. To support fairness, consistency, and therapeutic continuity, this practice maintains a transparent cancellation and non-attendance policy.

A minimum of 48 hours’ notice is required to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Cancellation fees apply to all bookings cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice, regardless of cause. Cancellations made more than 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment will not incur a fee. Cancellations made between 24 and 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment will incur a late cancellation fee of 50% of the consultation fee. Cancellations made within 24 hours, or failure to attend an appointment without notice (non-attendance), will result in the full consultation fee being charged. Medicare rebates cannot be claimed for missed appointments. All cancellation or non-attendance fees must be paid in full before further appointments can be scheduled.

Consultations begin and end at the scheduled time. Patients are asked to arrive on time for their appointment. If you arrive late, the consultation will still conclude at the scheduled time to ensure fairness to all patients. Arrival more than 25 minutes after the scheduled start time will be considered a non-attendance and charged at the full consultation fee, and the session may be rescheduled.

Every effort is made to commence appointments at the scheduled time. However, due to the nature of medical practice, delays may occasionally occur due to unforeseen circumstances, including medical emergencies. Your understanding in these situations is appreciated. If an appointment commences within 20 minutes of the scheduled start time, the remaining time will be made up at the end of the session where possible. If the psychiatrist is running more than 20 minutes late, you may be offered the option of a rescheduled appointment. The psychiatrist also reserves the right to reschedule appointments due to practitioner illness or other unforeseen circumstances.

Termination of a consultation by the psychiatrist due to inappropriate, abusive, or unsafe behaviour is not considered a cancellation or non-attendance. In such circumstances, the consultation fee for the full session remains payable and is non-refundable, in accordance with the Termination of Services / Ending This Agreement section of this agreement.

Repeated late cancellations or non-attendance may result in a review of the ongoing care arrangement and the suitability of continued services. Patients experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to discuss this with the psychiatrist.

Emergency Care

This practice does not provide emergency or after-hours psychiatric services. Services are provided by scheduled consultation only. Contact outside of scheduled appointments is strictly limited.

If you are experiencing an acute mental health crisis or require urgent assistance, please contact the Queensland Mental Health Access 24-7 phone line on 1300 64 22 55 (1300 MH CALL), or present to your nearest hospital emergency department. If there is a risk of serious injury, harm to yourself or others, or a life-threatening situation, call 000. Contact details for this practice must not be used for emergency purposes.

Payment & Medicare Rebates

Fees may be paid by EFTPOS, direct debit, or credit card. A non-refundable deposit (50% of the consultation fee) is required at the time of booking an initial consultation for new patients. All other fees are charged at the time of the consultation with details provided at the time of booking. Cash payment is not accepted, and no cash is kept at the practice.

Specialist psychiatric services (including psychotherapy) is usually provided as part of a GP referral, and most patients are eligible for Medicare Rebates. To be eligible for a Medicare rebate, a current referral from your General Practitioner (GP) is required. Rebates will be higher once you or your family reaches the annual Medicare Safety Net threshold. After you have met the Extended Medicare Safety Net threshold, Medicare will reimburse 80% of the out-of-pocket cost of your consultation. This will substantially reduce the ongoing cost of consultations if you become involved in ongoing treatment. Please visit the Medicare website or contact Medicare by phone (132 011) for further information about this scheme.

WorkCover & Other External Funding Sources

Dr Bowden is happy to provide treatment for individuals whose care is funded through WorkCover; however, Dr Bowden does not charge WorkCover directly. Patients insured under WorkCover will be required to pay consultation fees at the time of the appointment and it is up to patients to submit their claims for reimbursement to WorkCover independently. Consultation fees are unchanged for patients seen under WorkCover. Please note that this consultation fee does not include any WorkCover reports, and these are billed separately.

If you are eligible for reimbursement through private insurance, government programs, or other external funding sources, you will be charged directly at the time of the appointment and you are welcome to submit a claim independently. We can provide itemised receipts to support your claim, but it is your responsibility to check your eligibility and follow the claim process with your provider.
