About
His clinical experience includes work across inpatient, community, youth, and specialist services. He has particular experience in youth mental health and neurodevelopmental psychiatry, including the assessment and management of conditions such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorder, often in the context of co-occurring mental health difficulties. This has informed an ongoing interest in neurodevelopmental differences (neurodiversity) and their relevance to mental health care across the lifespan.
Dr Bowden has a particular interest in psychotherapy and is undertaking advanced training in individual psychodynamic (psychoanalytic) psychotherapies. Dr Bowden has completed EMDRAA accredited training in eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and is a full member of EMDRAA.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Bowden is actively involved in medical education and supervision. He has developed and delivered psychotherapy education programs and has experience supporting and mentoring doctors and trainees. He values reflective practice and ongoing learning, and remains committed to contributing to the development of psychotherapy within psychiatry.
Dr Alex Bowden is a specialist psychiatrist and psychotherapist based in Cairns, Queensland. He provides private outpatient care to adolescents and adults, offering comprehensive psychiatric assessment, ongoing treatment, and individual psychotherapy.
Dr Bowden holds Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP), reflecting a dual background in both psychiatry and general practice. This combined training informs a broad and integrated perspective, grounded in an understanding of the close relationship between mind and body.
Dr Bowden has a longstanding connection to North Queensland, having grown up in Townsville and completed his medical training at James Cook University in Townsville and Cairns. He has worked extensively across mental health services in Far North Queensland and interstate, bringing a breadth of experience spanning major metropolitan hospitals and sub-speciality services in Melbourne and Hobart, as well as many years working within the Cairns and Hinterland region and remote communities in Cape York. This combination of experience contributes to a strong understanding of the local community and its needs.
Approach & Ethos
Dr Bowden's approach to care places the therapeutic relationship between the doctor or therapist and patient at the centre, fostering a strong alliance built on curiosity, mutual understanding, and shared goals. Dr Bowden places an emphasis on providing compassionate, holistic care that addresses all aspects of mental health, recognising that difficulties often arise from an interplay of psychological, biological, developmental, social, and spiritual factors.
His work is informed by psychoanalytic principles and integrates contemporary understandings of trauma and its effects on both mind and body. This includes an awareness of how the body responds to and adapts to prolonged stress, and how these patterns may be expressed psychologically, emotionally, and physically. His approach has been shaped by engagement with contemporary research in the field of trauma, including developments in neurobiology, attachment, and body-based approaches to therapy, and contributions from international experts, including Bessel Van Der Kolk, Gabor Maté, Stephen Porges, and Peter Levine.
He is interested not only in reducing symptoms, but in understanding the underlying patterns that shape how a person thinks, feels, and relates to others. This includes consideration of how earlier experiences — particularly those involving stress, adversity, or trauma — may continue to influence present difficulties, often in ways that are not immediately apparent.
Dr Bowden also brings a developmental perspective to his work, including an understanding of neurodevelopmental differences (e.g., autism, ADHD). He recognises that these differences can meaningfully shape how individuals experience and respond to the world, and that treatment approaches for co-occurring mental health conditions often need to be adapted accordingly.
Where relevant, these perspectives are integrated into care in a measured and individualised way, supporting patients to develop a clearer understanding of their experiences and to work towards meaningful and sustainable change over time.
